Room Refresh on a Budget

Design Tips to Update a Space

Wanting to refresh a space but not able to do a complete overhaul? This may have you feeling as if you can’t do anything at all to improve your space. I don’t agree! Let me show you some examples of where small changes can have a big impact.

Before jumping in and going straight to the store to buy all the pretty things, take a minute to evaluate your space. Things to consider:

  • Does it currently function as we need it too?

  • Are there pieces of furniture we do not need/use? And are we using what we have to its full potential?

  • Is it cluttered or does it need to be organized?

Once we know this then we can look at inspiration online. Try Google, Pinterest & Instagram to get an idea of the “vibe” you want to accomplish. Now, let me stop you right here … if you are doing this project on a budget, you WILL NOT be able to exactly replicate those elaborate beautiful magazine ready rooms you see online. So set the expectation accordingly!!

How do we get the “Wow Factor” without creating a space like you see online? Well …..

FLOW

Your starting point is FLOW. Look at the walking paths of where you go in out of a room. Could the furniture be moved around to create a larger feeling space and accommodate the same walking path?

COLOR

Next is COLOR. Paint… paint… paint! I can not say this enough!! Paint will change everything. Painting a whole room, a single wall, or even a piece of furniture. And it is an inexpensive change that you can do yourself. (See saving $ already!)

Sticking with the color concept lets talk about if you want the room to be brighter and more airy or is this a space that would require more bold moody tones? Either way create a color palette. Select at least 3 colors that you plan to use on the wall, fabric, accents etc. This helps when shopping to narrow down all the choices.

PRIORITY

Continuing with your Room Refresh, next to think about is PRIORITY, and this could be different for everyone.

So, make a list of the most important things you want to change. For example it could be bedding, curtains, wall décor, rug or even a small piece of furniture. Then you can use the bulk of your budget in the areas that will bring you the most joy!

There is no right or wrong answer to how you complete a room update, just go into it knowing that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get a refresh or to love your new space!!

Below is a guest bedroom refresh that my team at Urban Sly Designs completed on a budget. This particular project was an add-on to a larger scope of work, and we used the extra budget to update the spare bedroom. We did not have to paint the space or buy any furniture. The main items are bedding, wall décor, lamps, and accessories to completely transform this space. Most items came from Target & Home Goods - The total cost was $565.
