5 Ingredient Shamrock Shake

A healthy twist on the seasonal, minty green, Shamrock Shake

Every year when March rolls around, McDonalds releases their well-known Shamrock Shake in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. While some may find it to be a tasty treat, it contains many harmful ingredients that should really be avoided if possible. High fructose corn syrup, yellow 5, and blue 1 are just a few of the ingredients listed on the label. And did I mention it has 63 grams of sugar? Yikes.

With just 5 simple ingredients, you can make your own Shamrock Shake at home that will benefit your health, not harm it. It’s sweetened with banana, naturally green from spinach, and flavored with peppermint extract. Here’s what you’ll need and how to make it!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 frozen banana

  • 1 large handful of spinach

  • 1 cup of almond milk, or milk of choice

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla

  • 1/4 tsp peppermint extract

  • Optional add ins for an extra boost of nutrition: vanilla protein powder, chia seeds, flaxseed, or hemp hearts

DIRECTIONS

Add all ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth. I topped mine with homemade dairy free whipped cream and Watkins naturally dyed green sprinkles to make it festive!

HEALTH TIP

I love using Malk Vanilla Almond milk because of its simple ingredients. It doesn’t contain any gums or fillers and has a great flavor. If you’re buying nut milk at the store, be sure to read the label and choose one with minimal and simple ingredients, and no added gums or fillers. Want to make your own nut milk at home? Here’s the recipe I follow for homemade cashew milk.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup almond butter, or any other nut butter

  • 1 cup cashews

  • 3.5 cups filtered water

  • 2 pitted dates

  • 1 tsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS

Blend all ingredients in a high-power blender for 2 minutes. Refrigerate and enjoy!

I hope y’all enjoy these recipes and find that making your own versions at home can be just as good as the ones at your favorite restaurant or store!
